“Venus in Furs” is a novella written by the Austrian author Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. It is the best-known work by Sacher-Masoch and was originally intended to be part of an epic series called Legacy of Cain (German: Das Vermächtniß Kains). The novella was included in the first volume of the series, titled “Love” (German: Die Liebe), and it was published in 18701.
Plot Summary: The framing story revolves around a man who dreams of conversing with Venus while she wears furs. The unnamed narrator shares his dreams with his friend, Severin, who advises him on overcoming his fascination with cruel women by reading a manuscript titled “Memoirs of a Suprasensual Man”. This manuscript recounts the experiences of Severin von Kusiemski, who becomes infatuated with a woman named Wanda von Dunajew. Severin asks to be Wanda’s slave and encourages her to treat him in increasingly degrading ways. Initially hesitant, Wanda eventually embraces this dynamic, even as she disdains Severin for allowing it. Their relationship takes them to Florence, where Wanda treats Severin brutally and recruits African women to dominate him. However, when Wanda meets another man, Alexis Papadopolis, whom she desires to submit to, Severin’s desire to be her slave wanes. The novella concludes with Severin losing his submissive inclination. When asked about the moral of the story, Severin responds that women can only be companions to men when they have equal rights and education1.
Interpretations: In 1905, Sigmund Freud posited the term “Sadomasochism”, suggesting that someone who derives pleasure from causing pain to others in a sexual context can also enjoy pain inflicted upon themselves. This concept draws from the thinking of both Sacher-Masoch and the Marquis de Sade2.
